Beach Lifeguards – Saint John

The Canada Games Aquatic Centre (CGAC) is a community centre for wellness and active living. With aquatic amenities, a fitness facility, massage therapy, and other offerings onsite, there is something for all ages and abilities to enjoy. Featuring the only 50-metre pool in the province, the facility hosts public swims and other gatherings for the communities of the Fundy region, along with sport tourism events that contribute to the local economy. The organization is also one of the largest providers of swimming lessons in New Brunswick.

Governed by the Saint John Aquatic Center Commission, the CGAC is a registered charity that is subsidized through the Fundy Regional Service Commission.

The CGAC provides lifeguarding for four beaches in Saint John: Lily Lake (Rockwood), Fisher Lakes (Rockwood), Dominion Park Beach, and Little River Reservoir.

Under the direction of the Aquatics Manager and Duty Managers, the Beach Lifeguards and Beach Captains ensure the safety of patrons who use the beach area at the four beaches where the Canada Games Aquatic Centre provides lifeguarding services: Lily Lake (Rockwood), Fisher Lakes (Rockwood), Dominion Park Beach, and Little River Reservoir. They are required to keep track of their qualifications and ensure they remain up to date. They are responsible for ensuring the safety of all users of the beaches by actively supervising swimmers in the marked swimming areas, providing first aid when necessary, and conducting any tasks outlined by their supervisors to ensure the beach is safe and prepared for any users of the area. They are also required to set up the beach at the beginning of the shift and tear down the equipment at the end of the shift.

The Beach Captain provides onsite leadership for the team of lifeguards working at their location. In addition to the duties outlined above, they are responsible for ensuring all staff are at the beach on time and remain onsite for the full duration of their shift. The Beach Captain is the primary point of contact onsite for City of Saint John workers and Aquatic Centre management staff. Additionally, they are responsible for keeping track of sign-in sheets, first aid supplies and equipment, and for notifying the appropriate personnel if anything is missing/broken. The Beach Captain is also responsible for assisting in finding replacements for staff who have called in sick.
